After some playful back and forth on twitter, Low Times correspondent and Internet sensation JADED PUNK HULK was able to engage Brian Fallon of Gaslight Anthem in a lively Q & A session. It seems like they got along famously. Hulk kept his famous infamous temper in check and Brian stayed out of the emergency room. Sounds like a win-win to us! Here’s the first part of the duo’s historic summit.

LET CLEAR THE AIR HERE: HULK HEAR THAT BRIAN A PRETTY CHRISTIAN GUY. AND YET, HULK WATCH INTERVIEW WHERE BRIAN SAY JAWBREAKER JUST “ALRIGHT”. HULK THOUGHT CHRISTIANS NOT ALLOWED TO LIE? HERE CHANCE TO DO PENANCE: TELL HULK WHY BRIAN MAKE MISTAKE AND WHY JAWBREAKER AWESOME. BE SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE.

Brian Fallon: Okay, Okay, I confess to Hulk… I was being bad on purpose. I do love both Jawbreaker AND The Replacements. I truthfully believe I would never have been able to write the songs I’ve written without both of these bands. I said what I said for sheer shock value and to prove a point…

I feel that people sometimes judge other people upon things they like and form little groups of yes-men and women. They only want to be around people and listen to bands that think the same way they do. This is not everyone, and truthfully, it’s not even everyone on Punknews.org. I actually read that site all the time to find out what records are coming out, who’s on tour, etc. The reason I said what I said about some of the people on there, is that I see them lift people up and then drop them to the ground all the time. They take things too far sometimes, they threaten people, they talk about their family, they insult them, all because of something that’s not really important.

This scene that we all love is about diversity from those who shunned us, i.e. “society.” Punk was a place to go and a community to be apart of when I got into it. People are supposed to accept other people’s differences and move forward in spite of them.

My band is aiming high, there’s no hiding that. We signed to a big label and we want to play big shows, but we also want to give back and take out the bands we like, and give them a chance, and give money to charities we support. The more we get, the more we have to give. We may not be in the basement, but we have not forgotten where we come from, and we will always lend our hand back to our scene in whatever way we can. It might not be how some people want us to do it, but it’s what the four of us feel in our hearts. I’ll never forget that Punknews.org gave us our first stories online, and for that I’ll always support them, and I’m sorry if anyone thought I was attacking the site, I was not.

I was only aiming at the people who don’t understand diversity inside the punk community. I mean after all, I’m just a fat guy who wants to be “The Boss” and Tom Waits, I’m a total hack and you should never listen to me.

BRIAN, YOU HAVE LOT OF TATTOOS. SO LET HULK ASK YOU: IF HAD TO CHOOSE OUT OF ALL THEM, WHICH DO YOU THINK IS YOUR FAVORITE JAWBREAKER SONG?

BF: My favorite song is either “Accident Prone” or “Kiss the Bottle.”

HULK HEAR THAT BRIAN MOVE TO BROOKLYN FROM NEW JERSEY AFTER WIFE MAKE YOU MOVE THERE BUT YOU NOT LIKE IT. WHO YOU THINK HAVE BETTER MUSIC SCENE: BROOKLYN OR NEW JERSEY? (HULK REMIND YOU THAT JAWBREAKER LIVE IN BROOKLYN)

BF: Amazing! New Jersey all the way, now that’s the TRUTH! I don’t care who’s from where, I’ll always love New Jersey!!!!! Plus, skinny pants freak me out.

HULK SURE YOU TIRED OF FIELDING QUESTIONS ABOUT BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, SO LET HULK ASK YOU QUESTION ABOUT BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: IF BRUCE HAD FAVORITE JAWBREAKER ALBUM, WHAT YOU THINK IT BE?

BF: Bruce doesn’t know about Jawbreaker, but I think he’d pick Bivouac. His favorite song would be “Chesterfield Kings,” because all his chicks, they smoke those things.

BRIAN, YOU BORN IN RED BANK, NEW JERSEY. THAT SAME PLACE KEVIN SMITH BORN. YOU FAN OF HIS WORK? WHAT YOUR FAVORITE DICK AND FART MOVIE HE MAKE? AND HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT HIM RETIRING FROM MAKING MOVIES?

BF: My favorite is probably Clerks. Berserker and Hulk would make a good boxing match at the Wawa. I didn’t know he stopped making movies. I can’t back his movies after the Jennifer Lopez one with Ben Affleck… too much.

GASLIGHT ANTHEM PLAY WITH THE MEASURE [SA] BUNCH OF TIMES. WHAT YOU THINK OF THE MEASURE [SA] BREAKUP? YOU HEARD NOTES RIGHT? IT SUCH GREAT RECORD. HULK ALMOST CRY WHEN HE HEAR THEY BREAK UP. HULK KNOW THEY NO BRUCE, BUT WHAT YOU THINK OF THEM?

BF: I actually loved the Measure [sa]. I think when Mikey was in the band they were on fire. I really thought they were going to be around for a while, I was surprised. Maybe they do reunion tour soon?

GASLIGHT OFTEN GIVE PROPS TO AGAINST ME! FOR TEACHING GASLIGHT TO BE A BAND. WHAT THEY TEACH YOU THAT MOST HELPFUL? THEY GIVE YOU PENMANSHIP TIPS FOR SIGNING MAJOR LABEL CONTRACT?

BF: AM! actually helped us see that in the music industry there are a lot of people who will say things to you just to get you to work with them so they can make money off of you. They really taught us how to see the difference between those who really like you and those who are just sniffing around the kitchen for the next hot meal. That was also our first big tour, so they did us a huge favor by taking us out. We don’t see them much anymore but I always wish them well.

YOU FOLLOW HULK FROM BEGINNING. IF HAD TO CHOOSE, WHAT YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT HULK?

BF: Well, truthfully Dave Hause showed me the Hulk twitter and I loved it. My favorite thing about you is that you aren’t afraid to say things that are true but you always manage to be nice about it… Brian learned a lot from Hulk… I think I’m a better person for knowing you.

Hulk is always on Gaslight guest list from now on… you tell me if you ever want to see a bunch of Springsteen wannabes from New Jersey and you in! FOR FREE! – LONG LIVE HULK!

SURE. LET HULK KNOW NEXT TIME YOU GUYS PLAY NEW YORK AND WE HANG. ESPECIALLY IF YOU PLAY WITH SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY GOOD.

That’s it for Part 1. Tomorrow, the tables are turned when Brian interviews Jaded Punk Hulk. Stay tuned!
